Atlantic to consider hotel tax
Copyright 2002 The Associated Press ATLANTIC, Iowa - The City Council has decided to schedule an election for a proposed tax on hotel and motel rooms. It's expected that voters will consider the 2 percent tax sometime in February, said City Administrator Ron Crisp. If approved, the tax would raise about $18,000 a year to promote local tourism, he said. The council had considered a 4 percent tax in 1999, but dropped the issue after protests from local hotel and motel owners. Under that proposal, much of the revenues would have gone toward the city's parks and emergency services. The latest proposal has much more support, Crisp said. If approved by voters, the tax would go
into effect April 1. |
