City Manager Veggo Larsen is backing off his proposal to impose a 4.5 percent tax on hotel rooms, instead suggesting a 3 percent tax that would go away in three years.

Still, opposition is expected when the City Council holds a public hearing on the issue at 7 p.m. today at City Hall, 950 S. Birch St. The council must decide whether to put the tax proposal on the November ballot. Larsen said the new proposal would give city's five hotels a competitive edge over those in Denver and Aurora, while helping ease Glendale's projected budget crunch for the next three years.

But Michael Dunafon, president of the Greater Glendale Chamber of Commerce, said the tax would unfairly target one sector of the business community.
