Denver International Airport travelers will be paying an extra $1.50 for the privilege of flying from Denver, starting April 1.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that airports nationwide will be allowed to increase passenger facility charges on air tickets from the current $3 maximum to $4 or $4.50.

DIA filed an application with the FAA months ago to increase its passenger facility charges to $4.50 from $3, DIA spokesman Steve Snyder said.

The extra money will go into DIA debt service or into airport improvements, Snyder said.

Airports don't have to increase their charges, but if they do, the FAA set April 1 as the earliest start date to give the airlines time to reprogram their computers to collect the higher charges.

Under law, a passenger can be charged a maximum of two airport fees per one-way flight and four per round-trip flight, regardless of the number of intermediate stops an airplane might make.
