TOKYO - A new Tokyo hotel tax introduced in October yielded over 109 million yen in its first month, officials of the Tokyo metropolitan government said Wednesday.

The figure represents an annualized 1.3 billion yen, which is roughly in line with the initial estimate of 1.5 billion yen for the full year, the officials said. The Tokyo government introduced the hotel tax on Oct. 1, levying a charge of 100 yen per night on hotel bills of 10,000 to 15,000 yen and 200 yen on bills of over 15,000 yen.

The new tax covered 320 hotels and inns in Tokyo as of the end of November. A total of 284 of them submitted tax returns for October. Proceeds from the tax are used to promote Tokyo as a tourist destination.

Separately, the Tokyo government expects to receive 109.6 billion yen in tax revenue from major banks in fiscal 2002 under its size-based taxation, up slightly from the previous year's 102.9 billion yen, the officials said.
