Mayor wants hotel tax
Copyright 1999 Sun Media Corporation Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman yesterday called on the province to impose a hotel tax of up to 3% to raise money to promote tourism in the city. "Particularly now, when our dollar is so low (compared to the U.S. dollar) -- it's 67 cents -- we should be promoting like hell," said Lastman. Tourism Toronto said hiking the PST for hotels by 3%
would generate $26 million a year. Neither the government nor the hotel industry favour a
tax. In the News |
